![]() ![]() There isn’t much to do in Salt Lick, Texas so everyone minds everybody else’s business. ![]() And while I still love all the titles of the books, this one fell far short of book one in the series, “Since You’re Leaving Anyway, Take Out the Trash.” I wish more time had been spent with Debbie Sue and Edwina, that their husbands had had more than cameo appearances and that the humor didn’t seem quite so forced. This is the second book I’ve read in your series set in the minuscule west Texas town of Salt Lick featuring the dynamic duo of hair stylists Debbie Sue Overstreet and Edwina Perkins-Martin. Although at first an enemy, Flip went on to become one of the recurring heroes. One sight of Flip's hat was enough to take Nemo back to the land of the living during these early days. His problem was that he kept being awakened by Flip, who wore a hat with "Wake Up" written on it. ![]() Sometime during early 1906, Nemo did indeed reach the gates of Slumberland, but had to go through about four months of troubles to reach the Princess. ![]() The adventures leading to these disasters all had a common purpose: to get to Slumberland, where he had been summoned by King Morpheus, to be the "playmate" of his daughter, the Princess. ![]() In the earliest strips, the dream event that woke him up would always be some mishap or disaster that seemed about to lead to serious injury or death, such as being crushed by giant mushrooms, being turned into a monkey, falling from a bridge being held up by " slaves", or gaining 90 years in age. The last panel in each strip was always one of Nemo waking up, usually in or near his bed, and often being scolded (or comforted) by one of the grownups of the household after crying out in his sleep and waking them. The strip related the dreams of a little boy: Nemo (meaning "nobody" in Latin), the hero. Although a comic strip, it was far from a simple children's fantasy it was often dark, surreal, threatening, and even violent. ![]() ![]() ![]() In between these essays, Mohanty meditates on the lives of women workers at different ends of the global assembly line (in India, the United Kingdom, and the United States) feminist writing on experience, identity, and community dominant conceptions of multiculturalism and citizenship and the corporatization of the North American academy. Mohanty offers here a sustained critique of globalization and urges a reorientation of transnational feminist practice toward anticapitalist struggles.Feminism without Borders opens with Mohanty's influential critique of western feminism ("Under Western Eyes") and closes with a reconsideration of that piece based on her latest thinking regarding the ways that gender matters in the racial, class, and national formations of globalization. This collection highlights the concerns running throughout her pioneering work: the politics of difference and solidarity, decolonizing and democratizing feminist practice, the crossing of borders, and the relation of feminist knowledge and scholarship to organizing and social movements. Forging vital links between daily life and collective action and between theory and pedagogy, Mohanty has been at the vanguard of Third World and international feminist thought and activism for nearly two decades. Bringing together classic and new writings of the trailblazing feminist theorist Chandra Talpade Mohanty, Feminism without Borders addresses some of the most pressing and complex issues facing contemporary feminism. ![]() ![]() They include American Fairy Tales, American Tall Tales, Tarzan, The Bone Man, The Sailor's Alphabet, Escape from Slavery: The Boyhood of Frederick Douglass in His Own Words, Iron Horses, and Trapped by the Ice: Shackleton's Amazing Antarctic Adventure. Unlike the above-mentioned novels, " When Strangers Marry" will not immortalize our heroes frolicking around in the romantic English countryside, but it does give them a decent amount of prancing within the "exotic" New Orleans' Creoles' society. that's kind of the whole point for these types of books. According to the description blurb, this has been rewritten, but I still wouldn't call it "memorable enough" nor even entertaining enough. ![]() After plowing through the books listed here on GR, it was inevitable that I stumble on one of her older works.
